Fargana Qasimova, from Baku, Azerbaijan, is the daughter of renowned Mugham singer, Alim Qasimov. Her refined vocal style reveals an urban sensibility, which includes both the sophisticated Azerbaijani classical music known as mugham and lighter songs traditionally performed by ashiqs—troubadours who often perform with a small ensemble. In this performance, Fargana sings music of the ashiqs, accompanying herself on a small frame drum or daf.
