A case study on digitising hazard data in Afghanistan

Collecting data on development activities has always required reams of paper, but decision making is often hampered by the task of locating and analysing the data. To improve data management, the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) in Afghanistan decided to digitalise its data collection systems. AKAH collects a lot of information related to hazard data in the seven Afghan provinces in which it operates, so speed of retrieval is of the essence. AKAH needs to access data in real-time if it is to make timely and informed decisions on disaster preparedness and response.

In 2019, AKAH began working with ActivityInfo, an on-line data system aimed at replacing paper-based data collection system. ActivityInfo’s tool not only provides AKAH a centralised place for collecting and managing data, it also saves time for inputting and analysing data to help AKAH make quicker and better informed decisions. In fact, as of July 2020, 80% of the data collection handled by AKAH is managed via ActivityInfo. AKAH has already collected data on 730 villages.

Because the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) needs access to hazard data in real-time if it is to make timely and informed decisions on disaster preparedness and response, it now collects data via an online data system called ActivityInfo.

At the outset of the COVID-19 crisis, the Afghan Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) requested AKAH’s support to improve data management for the Crisis Coordination Centre for country’s COVID-19 response. AKAH recommended ActivityInfo to streamline data collection and management across the country. In May 2020, the partners created a system that links the 34 provinces of Afghanistan with the Crisis Coordination Centre in Kabul. Today the system is used to manage data related to the COVID-19 response countrywide. All formal data related to COVID-19 are collected in ActivityInfo using forms in one database under the Ministry of Public Health. Data can be directly reported via these online forms and the Ministry can quickly access the data and the developments in the country through a single source.
