Healthcare camps provide care to 45,000 people in flood-affected areas of Pakistan

9 September 2022

As the devastating floods hit Pakistan, the Aga Khan University (AKU) quickly collaborated with the federal and provincial governments, local authorities and partners, including the Aga Khan Health Services, to provide health care in the affected areas.

With years of experience in working with remote populations, AKU’s mobile units were soon ready to go. The first healthcare team reached the flood-affected village Buhryoon in Matiari District, Sindh, where it provided care to nearly 250 villagers in a single day.

To date, AKU’s 13 healthcare camps and mobile units have provided care to over 45,000 people in 11 districts of Sindh and Balochistan, including Matiari, Thatta, Dadu, Badin, Qambar Shahdadkot, Sanghar, Naushahro Feroze, Lasbella, Qila Abdullah, Chaman and Jafferabad.

“We appreciate the Aga Khan University’s collaboration with the Government of Sindh to support the flood relief efforts in the province,” said Dr Azra Pechuho, Minister of Health and Population Welfare, Sindh.

As the need grows, AKU is expanding its services across Sindh and to other areas in the country, and is preparing to continue its healthcare support once the waters recede.

The University has collected funds to support the healthcare camps, including Rs 6 million ($27,250) donated by faculty, staff and students.

AKU’s flood response task force is also exploring options to provide specialist training focused on water-borne and vector-borne diseases to public health professionals. The free flood disaster treatment masterclass certificate already organised by the task force was attended by healthcare workers from around the country.

AKU’s work is part of the larger AKDN response to the floods. Read more:
