Kazakh singer Ulzhan Baibussynova illustrates the venerable tradition of epic singers called zhyrau—solo performers of oral poetry who typically accompany themselves on the dombyra—a strummed lute with gut strings. Female zhyraus were once rare, but Baibussynova has provided a highly visible model for a generation of younger women who are challenging traditional gender boundaries in Kazakh music.
