After a fruitful collaboration with AKU-ISMC, CyArk, and ICOMOS, Google Arts & Culture (London) has launched the new website Heritage on the Edge: How people around the world are protecting their cultural sites against climate change.

Google Arts & Culture have been working closely with its partners to digitally record and share stories around the world of heritage at risk, with the goal to preserve and share the world’s most unique cultural monuments and heritage sites.

This fascinating project allows you to join and explore over 50 online exhibits. These include 3D models, Street View tours, and interviews with local professionals and communities about Rapa Nui’s (Easter Island) iconic statues, the great mosque city of Bagerhat in Bangladesh, the adobe metropolis of Chan Chan in Peru, Scotland’s Edinburgh Castle and the coastal city of Kilwa Kisiwani in Tanzania—all heritage sites that are affected by the climate crisis.

Professor Stephane Pradines of AKU’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations has contributed greatly to this project and shared his expertise on Kilwa Kisiwani and the Swahili Coast, Tanzania. He worked on Early African Ports and International Maritime Trade, How Kilwa Kisiwani is Creating Sustainable Conservation, and Who Are the Swahili? which are available on this new website.
