Providing opportunities for women and girls
In the Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral districts of northern Pakistan, the Network’s policy of maintaining a 65:35 ratio of girls to boys in its schools has had dramatic effects on female matriculation and academic achievement.
In Bihar, India, women with little formal education benefit from literacy and numeracy training to help them manage their community-based savings groups.
Before the creation of these mixed-caste groups (Hindu and Muslim), supported by AKDN in 2008, the women of these villages did not leave their homes. Today, the groups’ meetings provide their members an opportunity for greater financial awareness and security, as well as social support.
