  • Over the last three years, more than 1.5 million trees were planted in Kenya by AKDN and its partner, Lions Clubs International, much of it in Kenya’s Mau Forest. The project is part of a broader AKDN programme that has planted over 100 million trees in Asia and Africa over the last 25 years. By planting trees, AKDN supports biodiversity, restores degraded forests, revives rural communities and provides carbon sequestration to combat climate change.

  • AKDN’s Serena tree-planting programme has been in place since 1991, with its initial success in the Hombe Forest in the Mount Kenya National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) that suffered from the adverse effects of deforestation, and at Amboseli National Park (photo). Most of the trees planted by Serena Hotels have been in partnership with local schools and communities. In 2015, close to 100,000 trees were planted across the different Serena properties in Kenya.

Agriculture and food security

The Coastal Rural Support Programme (CRSP) in Kenya has been working in semi-arid, marginalised rural areas of Coast Province since 1997.  Over the last decade, the programme has grown from working with four village organisations comprising less than 300 community members to working with 195 village organisations comprising more than 30,000 members.  The introduction of small farm reservoirs, which has provided the target population of 130,000 with critical access to water for both domestic and productive uses, has helped the majority of households to increase agricultural production and income, in spite of the increasing poverty in Coast province.
