Launched in 2014, the East African Institute is a policy forum which conducts research and fosters dialogue with the goal of developing policies to address the most important challenges facing the region, including youth, urbanisation, food insecurity, natural resources and climate change.

Dr. Farouk Topan, revered Kiswahili language and literature scholar, leads the development of the Kiswahili Centre and oversees the creation of the first digital Kiswahili collection in the world.  This collection will bring together manuscripts and materials on the heritage of the Swahili language and people, encompassing their history, literature, culture and music; manuscripts.  These materials will be digitised and made available online to scholars around the world.
