Reading from early age is fundamental preparation to a student's later progress through the formal education process. Yet little attention has been given to ensuing that all children become successful readers, including those who join school from homes with no reading materials and a mother tongue different to the language of instruction in school. The Aga Khan Foundation is undertaking work within the formal education system which specifically addresses the teaching of reading, and works with families and communities to ensure that children have more access to books and enjoyable reading opportunities.  There is increasing awareness among programme developers that what happens within the home is by far the most significant influence for young children.  Families are the primay agents in ensuring young children's wellbeing and working with families is now understood as crucial to the success of early childhood development and education efforts.  Research has demonstrated the many benefits of parents reading with their chlldren from an early age. Being read to is one of the strongest predictors of academic success. Reading for Children is a simple yet powerful concept, designed in order to meet the needs of children and families who otherwise may have little or no opportunity to engage in reading.
