For more than a century, the agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) have been contributing to the social, economic and cultural development of Tanzania, both on the mainland and in Zanzibar. AKDN social agencies work with the marginalised to achieve self-reliance through long-term, community-based and participatory approaches. Economic development activities of AKDN have significantly contributed to new sustainable enterprises and created jobs through long-term investments. AKDN’s programmes in culture restore and rehabilitate historic structures and public spaces in ways that spur social, economic and cultural development. In recognition of AKDN’s long and substantial contribution to the socioeconomic development of the country, an Agreement of Co-operation was signed with the United Republic of Tanzania in 1991 and subsequently revised and endorsed in 2001. The Agreement, which facilitates the effective utilisation of both financial and human resources, today stands as a commitment to accelerate development that brings the greatest benefit to Tanzanians.
