The agencies and institutions of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) have long championed the cause of good stewardship of the environment. However, as environmental degradation and climate change have had a growing impact on the populations that AKDN serves, protecting the environment and mitigating climate change, as well as helping populations adapt to the effects of climate change, has taken on increased urgency and importance. Environment and climate is a core strategic priority and cross-cutting theme for AKDN. While each of the AKDN agencies and institutions have their own mandates, they all have a crucial role to play in helping to protect the environment and mitigate climate change.

The fourth principle is leading by example. Through AKDN programmes and then by sharing our experiences with others, AKDN agencies hope to create awareness, increase impact, influence policy and effect societal transformation.
