The Mausoleum and the Man

8 March 2021

The soaring dome of the tomb of Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khanan abutting the favoured residential enclave of Nizamuddin East in Delhi now has partial covering of white marble. The neck below the dome, however, is entirely covered in an exquisite pattern of marble and red sandstone. Ratish Nanda, CEO of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) India, said during the restoration, he had serious concerns about the plan to restore the monument to its former glory. Work on restoring the mosques, mausoleums and madrassas began in earnest only in the 1970s, and AKTC had a major hand in that project too.
