It aims to help alleviate poverty in a way that is not only effective, but also sustainable. It is doing this by promoting the region as a new tourism destination. It is also supporting local people in the remote mountain villages of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region by helping them develop skill sets that are building the tourism sector.

The agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), particularly the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), have played a vital role in the restoration of a number of heritage projects in northern Pakistan. On 12 July, mountaineer Sirbaz Khan has successfully climbed the summit of the world’s 12th highest mountain Broad Peak. Serena Hotels has been supporting Sirbaz Khan on his "Mission Summit 14". He said His highness has played an important role for the promotion of Tourism by opening the Altit and Baltit forts to the public.
In Pakistan, Serena Hotels will host the country's first international conference on mountaineering, eco-tourism and hospitality in Karakorum International University Hunza campus under its Public diplomacy initiative. The three day conference, commencing on 27 June, aims to develop inclusive and informed discourse on relevant topics to create a culture of understanding through informed and diverse perspectives. Serena Hotels Pakistan also initiated Karighar-Women Skills Development project which works in the areas of stitching, embroidery and raw honey processing and packaging in the region.
