Hospitality group sets the standard for sustainability

A major sustainable milestone for Kenya’s tourism industry has recently been achieved, putting Serena Hotels at the forefront of Kenya’s most sought-after lodges and resorts which offer an eco-experience with the aid of solar photovoltaic. Four solar photovoltaic projects have been deployed for the Serena Hotels’ Lodges. Kilaguni Safari Lodge’s solar plant is recognised as Kenya’s largest off-grid solar tracker and off-grid lead-acid battery system. Serena Hotels received a Special Award in October 2018. In addition to a set record by Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge, Serena Hotel's Amboseli Safari Lodge has recently commissioned the first Tesla battery bank in Kenya and the largest supplied battery system in East Africa.

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge launches its Solar Power Plant

Serena Hotels and Mettle Solar OFGEN recently opened "Kenya’s first fully solar powered Lodge". Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge, located in Tsavo West National Park, implemented a fully-fledged solar power plant to provide for its entire power requirements and enhance environmental sustainability. All programmes of Serena Hotels are aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set out by the United Nation Development Programme. The newly-launched solar power plant particularly aligns to "SDG 13 Climate Action", with the aim of fighting climate change and its effects to the environment.

Marathon at Margalla Hills National Park draws crowd in hundreds

About 150 people participated in the marathon organised by Serena Hotels on 2 December. The Margalla Hills National Park carries great significance for people of Islamabad and Rawalpindi as it is the repository of indigenous flora and fauna, an escape from the traffic and chaos of city life and a source of clean air and water. Serena Hotels sponsored the marathon as part of its adventure diplomacy initiative. Serena Hotel CEO Aziz Boolani said preserving the environment was a very important cause to Serena Hotels.

Serena Kilaguni launches its solar power plant

Serena Hotels and Mettle Solar OFGEN have officially opened "Kenya’s First Fully Solar powered Lodge". Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge located in Tsavo West National Park implemented a fully-fledged solar power plant to provide for its entire power requirements and enhance environmental sustainability. Mr Mahmud Janmohamed, Managing Director of the Serena Hotels said the Serena Hotels continued to focus on innovative programmes that responded to the needs of the environment, economy and communities within which they operated.

Music show celebrates traditional, contemporary Urdu songs

An evening of musical nostalgia was held at the Serena Hotels in Islamabad as part of the Sarangi Music Initiative. Sajjad Haider revisited timeless melodies in Urdu reminding the audience of bygone eras. Sarangi is part of the Serena’s Cultural Diplomacy Initiative, which aims to preserve and promote the musical heritage of Pakistan. An annual competition over the last two years has given young performers and amateur bands from across the country a platform to share their talent.

MoU on support for sustainable development inked

On 20 November, the United Nations Development Programme in Pakistan and Serena Hotels signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic collaboration to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The MoU was signed by Country Director of UNDP Pakistan Ignacio Artaza and Serena Hotels Pakistan CEO Aziz Boolani. The partnership's purpose is to provide a framework of cooperation under the UNDP’s mission to support the achievement of the SDGs, helping build and share solutions towards sustainable tourism, biodiversity protection and wildlife conservation and under the Serena Hotel’s Corporate Social Responsibility.

UNDP signs MoU with Serena Hotels to form a strategy for achieving SDGs

On 20 November, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Pakistan and Serena Hotels signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a strategic collaboration to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This partnership aims to provide a framework of cooperation and facilitate and strengthen collaboration under UNDP’s mission to support achievement of SDGs, helping build and share solutions towards sustainable tourism, biodiversity protection and wildlife conservation under Serena Hotels Corporate Social Responsibility of promoting responsible management of natural resources, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods.

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge wins global best practice award

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge has scooped a global award at the Global Best Practise Awards 2018. The Serena Hotels and Resorts’ property bagged the Extraordinary Business Case and Corporate Social Responsibility award during the Global Best Practise Awards ceremony in Milan, Italy. Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge won the award for using eco-friendly practices in providing professional textile care through sustainable and energy efficient laundry services. The Global Best Practice Awards was started in year 2016 with the aim of recognising organisations that have shown ingenuity in business models that meet customer needs in a sustainable manner.

Serena Beach Resort and Spa and Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge win at the Kenya Eco-Warrior Awards

Serena Beach Resort and Spa located in Mombasa won the "Best in Protecting Marine Heritage" Award and Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge located within the Amboseli National Park won the "Best Accommodation Facility in Promoting Culture and Heritage" Award at the Kenya Eco-Warrior Awards 2018 Gala Dinner. Hosted by Eco-Tourism Kenya, the awards recognise industry players that embrace sustainable responsible tourism practices in their day-to-day operations. The theme for this year’s Eco-Warrior Awards was "Tourism; Protecting Culture and Heritage" with the aim to celebrate organisations that have preserved the socio-cultural aspects of the environment.
