Aga Khan Trust for Culture creates the Aga Khan Music Programme

The Aga Khan Trust for Culture, the cultural agency of the Aga Khan Development Network, has announced the creation of the Aga Khan Music Programme. Effective immediately, all existing activities of the Aga Khan Music Initiative and Aga Khan Music Awards are consolidated under the new programme, whose headquarters will remain in Geneva.

The Aga Khan Music Programme

At the inaugural prize-giving ceremony of the Aga Khan Music Awards in March 2019, His Highness the Aga Khan remarked that “in some parts of the world, the words ‘Muslim’ and ‘music’ are not often linked together in the public mind. But they should be”.  The film features performances by all inaugural laureates and tributes from music visionaries and cultural leaders such as Kronos Quartet’s David Harrington, BAM’s Joseph Melillo and Juilliard’s Ara Guzelimian, as well as commentary from Fairouz Nishanova, Director of the Programme.

Promoting livelihoods in arts and culture in Egypt through musical education

The arts offer youth a chance to explore, grow and connect with their cultural heritage while creating pathways to promising new futures. Yet all too often young people are excluded from those opportunities for lack of funds or out of fear that they will not lead to financially viable work. In Egypt, the Aga Khan Music Programme helped create two schools that address these issues by cultivating next generation musical talent through inclusive arts training programmes open to all.
