Kenya Charter Granting Ceremony of the Aga Khan University
On 11 June 2021, the Aga Khan University received its Charter from President Uhuru Kenyatta and inaugurated its new US$ 50 million (Ksh 5 billion) state-of-the-art University Centre. “The phrase 'Aga Khan' has become synonymous with elevating educational standards and delivering holistic training,” said President Uhuru Kenyatta. “From pre-school to tertiary learning, its footprints are felt in this nation and region as a whole; with the present university that we are awarding a Charter today, being the latest testament of the journey of academic excellence that is, the Aga Khan brand.”

In his inaugural address of the University Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, Aga Khan University President Firoz Rasul described the US $50 million investment designed by internationally renowned architecture firm Payette of Boston to be “the springboard that launches a new era in the Aga Khan University’s history in Kenya – an era that will witness the fulfilment of our ambitious plans for growth and impact”.

The Aga Khan University (AKU) received its Charter from President Uhuru Kenyatta and inaugurated its new US$ 50 million (Ksh 5 billion) state-of-the-art University Centre in the President’s presence on Friday at a ceremony featuring an address by His Highness the Aga Khan. Professor Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha, Chairman of the Commission for University Education, and AKU President Firoz Rasul also addressed the audience.

“It is with the greatest satisfaction and the deepest gratitude that I accept the Kenya Charter of the Aga Khan University,” said His Highness the Aga Khan. “The Charter details AKU’s functions, powers, obligations and governance. But it is more than a legal document. It is a vote of confidence in AKU and all those who are part of it – our faculty, our staff, administration, students, alumni, friends and supporters.”

Nation Media Group (NMG) has won six awards in the 2021 Global Media Awards organised by the International News Media Association (INMA). In a ceremony broadcast on INMA.org, YouTube, and Facebook Live, NMG was listed among 58 first-place winners across 20 categories on surfacing innovation and best practices in news brands, optimising use of media platforms, subscriptions, business development, and data and insights. NMG Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Stephen Gitagama said the win was a sign that “NMG’s digital transformation strategy is working and getting noticed”. “We are excited to win these awards, being the best in some of the categories, including those where we got honourable mentions. We are committed to offering good quality to our audience and doing better,” he said.
Aga Khan Hospital Accredited As A Centre Of Excellence In Acute Stroke Management
The Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi has been accredited as a Centre of Excellence for the management of Acute Primary Stroke, becoming the first hospital in Africa to achieve this certification. The accreditation was granted by the Joint Commission International (JCI), the recognised global leader in health quality standards, following a rigorous Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC) audit conducted in May 2021. “It testifies to our commitment to provide quality care guided by patient safety standards and aimed at good health outcomes,” the hospital said. Joint Commission Accreditation and Care Program certification means an organisation complies with the highest standards for safety and quality of care and is committed to continually improving patient care. The CCPC Standards are intended to benchmark specialty programs against the world’s most comprehensive and competitive standards.
A degraded planet imperils human survival
Dr Alex Awiti, Vice Provost at Aga Khan University, writes that everyone is part of, not apart from, nature. The state of societies’ health and economies are inextricably linked to the quality of ecosystems, in particular the delicate balance of diverse living components: air, water, soil, plants and animals. Dr Awiti adds that economists must account fully for the contribution of nature to national and global GDP. Prevalence of the Metabolic Syndrome Among Batswana Adults in Urban and Semi-Urban Gaborone
A study undertaken by a group of medical institutions, including the School of Nursing and Midwifery at The Aga Khan University in Nairobi, Kenya, examined the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetsS) in healthy adults in Botswana. An unprecedented high MetS prevalence was revealed among perceived to be healthy adults, with women at a higher risk. This public health concern creates an opportunity to establish evidence of risk factors and develop guidelines and strategies with appropriate public health measures to prevent and control MetS.
