Want to take a trip to the moon? Join the virtual tour inside the Aga Khan Museum

On 5 June, the Aga Khan Museum, in partnership with the Toronto Star, will take readers through the museum’s exhibition "The Moon: A Voyage Through Time" presented by its curator Dr. Ulrike Al-Khamis. This exhibition was created in 2019 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first human steps on the moon. Viewers will be able to see the giant sculpture entitled "Moon". The piece measures five metres in diameter, or 40 people standing shoulder to shoulder to circle it.

3D Tours at the Aga Khan Museum

The Aga Khan Museum in Toronto has pulled out all the stops with its online offering. There are so far eight 3D tours available as part of the #MuseumWithoutWalls programme, all created using Matterport 3D scanning technology. The tours cover a range of spaces: one could begin with the atrium, a central feature of the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki’s design for the museum, before progressing on to the permanent collections gallery, where around 200 objects from the 1,000-strong collection of Islamic art and artefacts are on display.

Step inside this never seen before Aga Khan Museum exhibition

On 15 May in Toronto, the Aga Khan Museum, in partnership with the Star newspaper, will bring readers inside "Sanctuary", the never seen before exhibition presented by its curator Dr. Michael Chagnon. The exhibition is a virtual tour to step inside an immersive space dedicated to exploring the concept of safe haven – a timely exhibition as many around the world are seeking safety in their home sanctuaries amid the pandemic.

Need a little beauty in your life? Visit a Canadian museum or art gallery

Although clicks and swipes will never replace standing close to an artwork that takes your breath away, Canada’s museums and galleries are working hard to bring cultural experiences directly to your screen. The Aga Khan Museum (AKM), north America’s only Islamic art museum, has opened its virtual doors with 3D tours of the stunning architectural site. The AKM is engaging on all platforms: through its collections, video performances from international artists and storytellers, and an eclectic Spotify playlist, "Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From MixTape."

A new leadership dialogue creating change through hope

When our sense of normality is challenged, we naturally seek ways to find solutions. Still, the current impact of Covid-19 has forced us to recognise our modus operandi is not enough to overcome the global crisis. For the Global Centre for Pluralism in Canada, the search is on for the next round of projects that represent new thinking through pluralistic approaches. The Centre’s Global Pluralism Awards highlight initiatives from across the world that bring together different groups to create dialogues and a better understanding of shared commonalities.

Aga Khan Museum hosting first-ever virtual music festival this week

Toronto’s Aga Khan Museum is hosting its first-ever virtual online music festival this week. The event, titled remixTOGETHER, presents "10 ground-breaking Ontario-based acts" and will be hosted on their website 22 April. According to the museum, each artist on the diverse bill takes a deeply rooted musical tradition and infuses it with surprising sonic flavours and fresh ideas.

Going digital not easy for cultural institutions

Due to coronavirus crisis, Canada’s museums and public art galleries quickly redirected visitors to their digital offerings. The Aga Khan Museum in Toronto has organised #Museumwithoutwalls which includes performances and views of the collection, including a curator’s tour of the upcoming Sanctuary exhibition. Its prescient theme is the meaning of sanctuary and it features rugs made by Pakistani artisans using traditional techniques but new designs provided by 36 contemporary artists, including Mona Hatoum, Brendan Fernandes and Ai Weiwei.
